Here are some tested tips and tricks from my personal experience that can help non-musicians to feel the music for relaxation.
Keep at least an hour exclusively for listening to music. Do not engage with any other activity at this time.
Listening to music for 10-15 minutes is not enough for proper relaxation.
It can only take you out of boredom at workplace.
Set a peaceful ambience to concentrate well into music. Choose a cosy corner of a room away from noise of busy outside world.
Soft indoor lighting with blue/green/red color is soothing for the eyes. Pull curtains to block bright outdoor lights.
Position yourself comfortably. Sit on a couch/recliner or lie down if you are listening to music before bedtime.
Since you are not using music for meditation, your posture does not matter. Maintain a resting position and relax.
Get a good pair of headphones to catch finer nuances of music. Adjust its volume at moderate level.
Select musical genre of your personal choice. Listen to any type of music that makes you happy.
When restless, I prefer instrumental music. I cannot focus on the lyrics in that state of mind.
To distract my mind from a tensed situation, I need vocal music with lyrics that can boost my mood right away.
No matter what genre you prefer, active listening is must. Stop any non-musical thoughts from entering your head.
Allow music to take charge of your thoughts and feelings. Give ear to every word/musical note with care to feel its emotions.
Observe in silence how your body cells absorb sounds of music and unwind. Your mind and body will thus regain ease and balance.
When you use music for relaxation with these tips and tricks, it brings peace and tranquility. This effect lasts for a day or more.
